Prevention Programs

A place to connect, create, and belong.

At UAY, we believe that belonging, creativity, and meaningful connections are essential to the well-being of young people. Our prevention programming creates welcoming spaces where youth can explore their interests, build friendships, discover new skills, and simply be themselves.

At the heart of our prevention services is the Swaim Youth Center, located in downtown Iowa City. This vibrant community space offers young people opportunities to create, connect, and grow through art, music, recreation, and supportive relationships.

We also bring the Youth Center experience to The Ranshaw House in North Liberty, offering a weekly hangout space where young people can gather, build friendships, and find community closer to home.

The Youth Center

Your space. Your pace. Your possibilities.

The UAY Youth Center is more than a place to go after school. It's a space where young people can show up as they are, try something new, connect with others, or simply relax.

Whether it's making art, learning an instrument, joining a group, playing video games, or hanging out with friends, there's room for everyone to explore what interests them.

Open Hangout Hours:

A welcoming place to spend time with friends, meet new people, play games, watch TV, or simply unwind.

Art & Creativity:

A dedicated art room where young people can experiment, express themselves, and explore different creative mediums.

Music & Recording:

Sewing & Making:

A dedicated sewing room for hands-on creativity, learning practical skills, and bringing ideas to life.

LGBTQ+ Groups:

Welcoming, affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth to build connections, find community, and express themselves.

Games & Recreation:

Video games, television, and opportunities to relax, have fun, and connect with peers.

Why Prevention Matters

Connection is powerful.

Prevention is about more than addressing challenges before they arise. It's about creating the relationships, experiences, and opportunities that help young people feel connected, confident, and supported.

When young people have spaces where they feel safe to express themselves, build friendships, discover their strengths, and experience belonging, they develop foundations that support their well-being far beyond the Youth Center.

At UAY, we believe that sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer a young person is simply a place where they know they belong.
