WHO ARE THE PARTICIPANTS?
The Youth Employment Training Program trains regular teenagers age 15-18 years old for the world
of work. Participants know that they need skills and experience to compete with college students in the job market.
So they've done something about that. They spend 10 hours in the UAY classroom, to learn the skills they need to get
and keep a job.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
- Employer Expectations: punctuality, language for the workplace, first impressions
- Communication Skills: active listening, assertiveness, learning styles
- Problem-Solving Skills: negotiation, conflict resolution, avoiding workplace triangles
- Job Seeking Preparation: resumes, references, applications, interviews, work documents
THE INTERNSHIPS
The Youth Employment Training Program provides internships to help you practice skills, gain experience
and hopefully, get a positive letter of reference for your job search. There are 6-10 hours of practice work, a 10-12
hour unpaid internship and a 36 hour internship (paid for Iowa City residents only), for those who are successful in the first
three phases of the program. This can be an incentive to an employer to hire you, because they get a chance to know
you and train you for a position.
