Festival of Flowers: 2008

Over 170 guests attended the third annual Festival of Flowers and competition at the Brown Deer Clubhouse on Thursday, June 5th. Sixty of these guests attended the sneak preview where they viewed the entries, cast votes for the People's Choice Award, purchased a Bagolita purse for an opportunity to win $300 community-wide gift certificates and purchased items in the Garden Shop.

The evening program was MC-ed by Michael Lensing. Tareq Abuissa, a sophomore at City High, played cello music and was accompanied by his mother Christy on the piano. Audrey Kernan was presented with an Iowa Academic Award and Laurissa Butler read some original poetry. The live auction was run by the father-daughter auction team of Brent and Emily Wears. The items auctioned include each of the first-place entries, Best in Show, People's Choice Award, Celebrity entries, a golf package, a mosaic window donated by Kelsi Fobian and a garden bench donated by Dick Schwab.

The event has grown and matured into an event the community looks forward to each spring. A special thank you goes to all the UAY staff for doing what they do best--getting young people involved in creative endeavors. The Youth Division is the largest group of competitors in the Festival. Thirty one young people participated in the 2008 competition followed by 15 amateurs and 12 professionals.
