Teen Parent Support and Education

Parenting can be tough and exciting for parents of all ages! The Teen Parent Program is here to offer support to pregnant and parenting teens and their families.

One-on-One Support

The Teen Parent Program serves pregnant and/or parenting young women, 21 years old and younger, in Johnson County. The Teen Parent Program tailors family support services to meet the individual needs of program participants through a strength-based, family-focused approach. Family support workers provide in-home parent skill building and child development education utilizing Parents as Teachers, a curriculum focused on parents being the first and most important teacher in their child’s life. Special emphasis is placed on:

  • Creating a nurturing home environment
  • Child development
  • Positive discipline
  • Role modeling: How to set a good example for your child. Show them the way you want them to act.
  • Age appropriate expectations

The Teen Parent Program can provide young families with gently used baby/child supplies and clothing.

Family support workers also assist young families with the following:

  • Educational goals and planning
  • Employment
  • Budgeting
  • Finding quality child care
  • Housing
  • Building healthy relationships
  • Referral to local services
  • Balancing adolescence with parenthood
