- Academic Mentoring Program:
The Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) is a program that matches volunteer mentors with students in junior high and high school who would benefit from one-on-one interactions with a caring adult. This program is offered at Northwest Junior High, South East Junior High, West High School and City High School. AMP Volunteers are asked to commit to the AMP program for one year and to meet once a week with their students. United Action for Youth (UAY) is one of the partnering agencies in this program along with Big Brothers Big Sisters. - Child Advocate:
The Child Advocate Volunteer helps provide child care for children of teen parents during group activities. Responsibilities include role-modeling, nurturing, and playing appropriately with infants and toddlers, basic cleaning chores, interaction with teen parents, and possible transportation for children to and from UAY. Skills and experience required include knowledge of child development, positive child discipline, ability to lift and hold children, and an energetic, loving, creative attitude with children.
- UAY Photographer/Videographer:
This volunteer provides photo and video documentation of various UAY activities and special events throughout the year. Photos and videos are displayed on the UAY website as well as posters, flyers, presentational materials and the UAY annual report.
- Artist in Residence Program – Visual Arts (AIR):
Each year, UAY selects 5-6 visual artists to provide professional assistance with the UAY Arts Program. Artist in Residence volunteers will participate in the planning, coordinating and instruction of various art activities that take place in the community, at the youth center, and in the schools. Artists in Residence are asked to commit for at least one school semester and must be available at least once a week during after school hours.
- Artist in Residence Program – Performing Arts (AIR):
Each year, UAY selects 3-4 performing artists to assist UAY staff with providing instruction in music, hip hop dance and improvisational theatre to junior high and high school students. Artists in Residence are asked to commit for at least one school semester and must be available at least once a week during after school hours.
- Youth Center Team:
UAY selects 4-5 volunteers each year from the community to assist UAY staff in the day to day running of the youth center. Youth Center Team Volunteers are specially trained in youth development concepts and are educated on topics relevant to young people. Youth Center Team Volunteers must commit for at least one school semester and be available at least once a week during after school hours or on Saturday afternoons.
- Image Alive Program Volunteer:
This volunteer assists the youth improvisational group with warm-ups, games, performances and special events. This volunteer should have the ability to role model the concept of “sharing the spotlight” and make beginner actors feel comfortable. The Image Alive Program Volunteer should be available to attend weekly rehearsals during after school hours and periodic performances.
- 'Street Team' Advertising & Marketing:
This team of volunteers assists UAY staff with getting the word out about band shows, art workshops, rap battles and other special events that happen throughout the year. Street Team volunteers hang posters, create flyers, and post information about upcoming events on-line.
- Outreach Team:
Volunteers placed on the Outreach Team assist UAY staff in organizing activities for young people in Regency, Solon, Coralville and North Liberty. Activities offered to young people include sports, games, music, and art. Outreach Team Volunteers will primarily be working with junior high and high school students during after school hours. Transportation is typically provided by UAY Staff.
- Flight Skool Assistant Manager:
The "Assistant Manager" of Flight Skool will assist UAY staff with an after-school, youth-led, hip-hop dance club for high school students. The Assistant Manager will be asked to help youth develop skills in dance choreography and performance, music selection and editing, teamwork, professionalism, and community involvement. The Assistant Manager will also accompany youth on occasional field trips and to performances, as well as help recruit and promote for special events.
- Health Education Program Assistant:
The Health Education Program Assistant would provide Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) participants with a healthy role model as well as weekly meeting facilitation and transportation as needed. YAP is a group of junior high and high school students who educate peers, parents and community members about issues such as sexuality, depression, healthy relationships, decision-making, body image and more. Ideally, the Health Education Program Assistant would also provide technological assistance for website maintenance, program planning and other administrative assistance for the health educator. This program is specifically looking for public health students and/or community members who are interested in seeing youth succeed.
- Receptionist Extraordinaire:
This volunteer position requires a friendly, outgoing person who is able to greet young people, parents and their families in a caring and professional manner. The Receptionist Extraordinaire also assists with clerical duties such as answering phones, making copies, sending faxes, and other office work. This volunteer position is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the wide range of services that UAY offers!
- The Do-Crew:
